What drives this body of work is the search for the sublime in the production of art. I approach every artistic endeavor from a faith-based perspective of all my experiences in life, but more specifically photography. As a result, the concept for my thesis project involves an exploration of the major themes surrounding the subject of the sublime. I chose to work on the sublime because I am routinely motivated to work within the genre of spirituality in my art, and I was very curious to more thoroughly investigate the peripheries of the issue. From collaborated sources, my understanding of the sublime describes an object or image that inspires awe.

In a world saturated with images, recording remains the prime function of photography. The opposite of it, transforming, is creating new values, thus creating is art. There is adapting in between, which is marketing, i.e. News photography couples with the referential (informative) function, art photography with the poetic one, commercial with the conative (appellative). Photography as ubiquity means immense growth of the referential function, which in form of an interpersonal snowball makes people socialise and create networks. The context of our lives becomes public, opening the doors for mass marketing. In advertising, applying its appellative function, photography affects our lives and, to meet the needs of the seller, adapts reality. Referential, too, is getting appellative, resulting in reliability decay. Art photography in part goes public, in part gives up poetic for referential. Boundaries overlap, the wheel of functions is turning. Photography, mass communication, language, functions, advertising, marketing, social, commercial.

The below is taken from the SVA Photo, Video and Related Media Department information packet on the MFA thesis process. The second year of the program is heavily focused on the process so I thought I ought share what it’s all about. The thesis project is the main and most significant aspect of your master’s year work. The thesis project is a creative endeavor and an original investigation of a specific viewpoint. Because the MFA degree is a terminal degree in this field, it is expected that the project be at the highest level of visual artistic work. It must bear up to the scrutiny of the creative community, and further our understanding of its specific investigation. The project follows as a result of the candidate’s thesis proposal as a unique body of artwork, demonstrating the capacity to push the limits of what is possible in the multi-‐faceted realms of the visual arts.

Imagine being Stephen Hawking’s dissertation advisor? Not that most of us can put ourselves in the shoes of eminent Cambridge physicist Dennis Sciama... but imagine a student succeeding so profoundly, after having overcome such remarkable difficulty, to become the celebrated Stephen Hawking? One would feel immensely proud, I’d guess, and maybe just a little intimidated. Some graduate-level professors might even feel threatened by such a student. Ellis and Roger Penrose write, when Hawking announced a significant finding about black holes in 1974, Sciama “quickly recognized the importance... It’s doubtful, however, that Sciama—who signed off on Hawking’s thesis in 1966 and died in 1999—felt this way. hailing it as initiating a new revolution in our understanding.” Despite his portrayal by David Thewlis as “a kind of authoritarian gatekeeper” in the Hawking biopic , Sciama “was much more than that picture suggests,” writes another of his highly accomplished mentees, Adrian Melott; “he was a superb mentor who brought out the best in his students.” Ellis and Penrose, themselves esteemed scientists strongly influenced by Sciama, write of his “astonishing succession of research students,” three of whom became fellows of the Royal Society. While he may be talked of as a lone eccentric singularity whose mind operates above our mortal plane, like every scientist, he developed in a community that includes many such minds.
My goal for this thesis project has been to find where I and the subjects of my photographs fall on the sliding scale of interpretation and perception. The photographs themselves—viewed apart from my political thoughts-- cannot suggest whether Broadway St. will be a more or less interesting, or a better or worse place ten. The Fine Arts Gallery presents both professional and student-oriented exhibitions every semester. Professional exhibitions are organized to spotlight the range and diversity of both contemporary and historical art.
