Library and Archives Canada has temporarily suspended thesis harvesting from university institutional repositories in order for technological improvements to be made. The primary purpose of a thesis or dissertation is to train the student in the process of scholarly research and writing under the direction of members of the Graduate Faculty. After the student has graduated and the work is published, it serves as a contribution to human knowledge, is useful to other scholars and perhaps even to a more general audience. Electronic thesis and dissertations (e TDs) expand the creative possibilities open to students and empower students to convey a richer message by permitting video, sound, and color images to be integrated into their work. Submitting and archiving e TDs helps students to understand electronic publishing issues and provides greater acess to students' research. Through the Web, people from any place on the globe can link directly to e TD collections at Penn State and other universities.

Having studied the nature of man according to his nature, his origin in soul by an immediate creation of God and in body by some special agency directed by God, we are now in a position to examine into the moral and religious phase of human kind. Our immediate concern will be with the first man, Adam, as the father of his race; and our scope of inquiry will be twofold: to establish the fact that he was possessed of original justice or sanctity, covered by the term "sanctifying grace," and of certain additional gifts that followed on this supernatural orientation, namely, in his mind, and body and relation to the external world. The basis which we face in this matter is the naturalistic mentality, almost inbred in modern thought, which conceives of man as autonomous agent and self-sufficient "master of his own destiny." Yet faith requires us to say that man not only came from the hands of God primordially, in soul and body, but his destiny is beyond the capacities of nature and therefore a sheer gift of divine love. All that we ever say in theology about the supernatural order had its beginnings for the human race in Adam, in the possession he received from the Creator and the means he was given to retain the gift for himself and transmit the same to his progeny. From the viewpoint of modern paleontology and ethnology, which posit man in ancient times as crude and undeveloped, we seem to face a contradiction to the present thesis.

"It has been very well observed that there is no such thing as an impartial historian. Every man who sets out to trace the development of life, whether in politics, religion, or art, is bound to do so with some theory in his mind... The historian, or the theologian, who is most nearly impartial is not he who has no view, but he who is aware of other views, and can give them due consideration." in 2004, this magazine followed the controversy closely. We devoted two cover stories to the topic when the controversy over the film touched the Vatican, after Pope John Paul II agreed to view the film and offer a brief judgment ("It is as it was"), suggesting that he found no underlying theological problem with the film’s portrayal of Christ’s passion. During those months of controversy, there was considerable interest in the faith that inspired Gibson’s work -- his fervent Catholicism.

In a previous post Peta Freestone and Liam Connell wrote about the ideas behind Thesis Bootcamp. Much of what Rachel did conformed with what I suggest in my earlier post, but I couldn’t bring myself to really believe Rachel’s productivity claims. Imagine if you could reliably write 10,000 words a day, how long would it take to finish your thesis… The Thesis Bootcamp concept is simple – put a whole lot of Ph D students in a room for a whole weekend and set them the goal of writing 20,000 words each. At every Thesis Bootcamp we have run, at least one student will achieve this goal, and many write many more words than they thought they would. Well, Rachel says she can, with three conditions: 1) Know what you are going to write before you write it 2) Set aside a protected time to write, and 3) Feel enthusiastic about what you are writing I read the post with interest. Thesis Bootcamp (and the veteran’s days which follow) is a total program designed to help late stage Ph D students finish their thesis document (In some countries this document is called the ‘dissertation’, but I will use the Australian term ‘thesis’ here). The Thesis Bootcamp formula was developed by Liam Connell and Peta Freestone of the University of Melbourne. I’m now a 10,000 words a day believer because I have been watching students write even more than this in a single day at the Thesis Bootcamps we run at ANU.

Alarming issues such as depletion of renewable freshwater and shortage in cement, especially in the Philippines, are evident nowadays. Traditionally, steel is used as reinforcement to concrete to compensate its low tensile strength. However, structural steel is only limited to some countries due to its limited natural resource and lack of skilled labor. Consequently, the use of suitable materials as alternative reinforcements to concrete, such as bamboo, are highly recommended due to its ease of availability, low cost, lightweight characteristics, flexibility and toughness. The significance of this study is directed towards sustainable development wherein alternative construction materials are being tested for their effectiveness in construction.

Rodham, Wellesley College class of 1969, has been speculated about, spun, analyzed, debated, criticized and defended. As forbidden fruit, the writings of a 21-year-old college senior, examining the tactics of radical community organizer Saul D. Alinsky, have gained mythic status among her critics — a “Rosetta Stone,” in the words of one, that would allow readers to decode the thinking of the former first lady and 2008 presidential candidate. Despite the fervent interest in the thesis, few realize that it is no longer kept under lock and key.
