Masters student Eadie Hancock spent a month in Indonesia working on communication strategies for Australian Volunteers International (AVI). During the CSC Practicum placement, Eadie used participatory methods to evaluate AVI Indonesia’s communication processes, particularly in relation to its volunteer network. She was based in Jakarta, but also travelled to Nias Island off the coast from North Sumatra and Bogor in West Java to talk with volunteers about their assignments and experiences. “I ended up combining a Participatory Needs and Opportunities Assessment (PNOA) with an abbreviated Communication Strategy. I then implemented a participatory newsletter and a Facebook closed-group for volunteers,” Eadie says. She says the Practicum helped her to appreciate the importance of good internal communication for any organisation. Eadie explains: “Before going, I was concerned that I wouldn’t have much to offer to an already successful organisation. However, with time and financial constraints, some of these organisations are simply unable to review their communication processes.” By spending a significant amount of time devoted to understanding and analysing AVI Indonesia’s communication processes, Eadie was able to shed light on its strengths and weaknesses.
