Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer is a nonfiction story. A significant theme I found in Into the Wild is Chris's desire for exploration, and explanation of true. Written by Jon Krakauer, is a non-fiction account of the story of Chris Mc Candless, a young man from a privileged background who after graduating university embarks on a quest to ‘walk into the wild’ living only off the land and in complete isolation, therefore achieving his desire to escape from the entrapment of what he sees as an artificial consumer society. However, by August 1992 Mc Candless had died alone and starving, just four months after he had walked into the Alaskan wilderness. Jon Krakauer takes the reader deep into the psyche of Chris Mc Candless through his diary entries, letters to friends and highlighted passages in the books he carried, mainly from authors such as Henry David Thoreau, Boris Pasternak and Jack London, all of whom create an idealistic vision of the wilderness as a place of beauty and truth where one can escape reality, which it would seem Mac Candless naively embraced as fact. The sporadic injections of personal writings by Mc Candless provide the skeletal frame for this book, the flesh and blood being created through a mixture of Krakauer’s own interpretation of what happened to Chris, based on his intensive research, police reports and an admitted personal connection to the tale of Mc Candless. It is this personal connection that allowed Krakauer to write in such an empathic manner, which becomes infectious for the reader. That’s the only difference.’ The addition of these other tales somehow normalises the extreme edges of Chris’ personality, sucking the reader into a world of youthful self-discovery, determination, naivety and romanticism. There is even a small section of the book where Krakauer’s similar yet unique personal Alaskan struggle is described, along with others of a comparable nature. Although Krakauer is clearly aligned with Chris and believes, or least sympathises, with what he was trying to achieve, he is also very aware of the condemnation that many people have of the situation. This is partly because after he had initially told a condensed version of the story of Chris in an article he wrote for the magazine he was bombarded with mail from readers criticising the actions Mc Candless took. It seems the main criticisms were because Chris was un-prepared with a lack of knowledge of his surroundings and insufficient equipment, (he did not even have a map or a compass) which many people saw disrespecting the wilderness.

How do Tracks and Into The Wild portray those who abandon social convention At the heart of Robyn Davidsons Tracks and Sean Penns Into The wild is an exploration of society. Both narratives centre around a protagonist who unconventionally choses to leave the confines of society. As such, both Davidson and Penn explore similar thematic subtexts; portraying the quixotism of freedom, a need to test the confines of society, and the downfalls of societal norms with astonishing similarity with both authors* advocating a life outside society. However, where both texts explore these ideas they do so from significantly different view points and through different means. Tracks, as a memoir, reflects Robyns life, as an obstinate woman plagued with self-doubt in relatively rural living situations. Whereas, Into The Wild reflects Chriss journey as a member of upper society, with a strong moral compass and sense of self.

His body was found about four months later, in September 1992. The article in magazine garnered a great deal of attention, and Krakauer found himself obsessed with the question of what led Mc Candless to this extreme end.
