ESSAYS ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT by Wanasin Sattayanuwat A DISSERTATION Presented to the faculty of The Graduate College at the University. The term & quot; integration & quot; comes from the Latin word integrio, which means the uniting of any parts, individual elements. From an economic point of view, integration is the result of the mutual adaptation and integration of national economies of different countries into a single economic system. The main conditions, prerequisites for the creation and effective functioning of regional integration associations are: - the proximity of the conditions of economic development and the degree of market maturity of integrating economic systems; - the geographical proximity of the countries joining the integration union, the existence, as a rule, of a common border, as well as historically formed economic and political ties; - the commonality of economic, social and other problems facing the countries in the field of development, financing, regulation of the economy, political cooperation, etc. The main goals of functioning and newly created integration associations, as a rule, are: - creation and use of the effect of the scale of the common market; - creating a stable and predictable environment for mutually beneficial trade; - assistance in restructuring economic systems through the use of experience of partner countries with a higher level of development; - strengthening of mutual understanding and cooperation of countries in political, social, cultural and other non-economic areas. Key terms: liberalization of world economic relations; preferential agreements; preferential trading club; Free trading zone; Customs Union; full economic union (common market); integration effects: static, trade deviations, trade creation, dynamic; the flow deflection effect model; model of flow-forming effect; integration associations: EU, NAFTA, ASEAN. The development of integration processes in the world economy, observed in recent decades, is a logical result of the growth in the volume of international trade and the increase in the intensity of the international movement of factors of production, which required the creation of more reliable supply-and-demand links between countries, as well as the removal of obstacles still in the way international trade and the movement of factors of production between countries. It was possible to do this only within the framework of interstate integration associations (political and economic). ■ Economic integration - the process of economic interaction between countries, leading to the liberalization of international economic relations, which is reflected in the reduction and removal of restrictions on their implementation.

School of Law, Politics and Sociology. Dissertation Int Trade Law 827M3. Plan and execute a substantial research project in the area of international trade law The current international trade regime is flawed, unjust and in need of redress. It largely ignores concerns for global economic justice, and fails those most in need of a strategy to help them move out of extreme poverty. It exacerbates inequalities, both between states in global society and within individual countries. It also creates a competitive pressure on producers to use the differing legal standards and enforcement between countries to externalize important environmental, social /human rights and cultural costs that harm others now or in the future. In the first two chapters, this dissertation draws out, and considers critically, the position several philosophers with strong, well known, positions on economic justice have taken in relation to international trade in order to construct a working baseline for justice in international trade . In the third chapter, it then discusses the two standard models for international trade, the self-regulating free trade model and the protectionist alternative, considering critiques of, and support for, the models from the point of view of economists concerned about poverty, inequality and environmental and social issues. In the fourth chapter several alternative models, proposed by philosophers or economists, for a more just international trade regime are examined and evaluated. In the fifth chapter, a new alternative model for a more just international trade regime is presented, which takes into account; concerns for reducing absolute poverty in global society, reduction of economic inequalities that lead to political inequality both in international society and within states, and the concern for ensuring that social and environmental costs for others, now and in the future are accounted for.

This dissertation studies the impact of international trade on China along different dimensions. The first chapter investigates how the decline in trade barriers and the resulting export expansion affected human capital accumulation in China. Following a theoretically consistent approach, I exploit variations in regional exposures to high- and low-skill export demand shocks, which stems from the diverse initial industry composition across prefectures, and differential skill intensities across industries. I find that high-skill export shocks raise both high school and college enrollments, while low-skill export shocks depress both. The amplified differences in skill abundance across prefectures reinforce the initial industry specialization. These findings suggest a mutually reinforcing relationship between regional comparative advantage and skill formation. The second chapter examines the impacts of export expansion on air pollution and health outcomes in China.

Wang, Feifei, "Income Distribution, International Trade and Foreign Direct Investment with Heterogeneous Firms" 2016. FIU. This dissertation employs tools from Labor Economics and International Trade to study how workers and labor markets adjust to economic shocks arising from trade liberalization and technological change. It contributes to the existing literature by studying several economic mechanisms that determine the magnitudes of these adjustments. The first chapter of this dissertation analyzes the roles that skill transferability and the local industry mix have on the adjustment costs of workers affected by negative trade shocks. Using rich administrative data from Germany, we construct novel measures of economic distance between sectors based on the notion of skill transferability. We combine these distance measures with sectoral employment shares in German regions to construct an index of labor market flexibility. This index captures the degree to which workers from a particular industry will be able to reallocate into other jobs. We then study the role of labor market flexibility on the effect of import shocks on the earnings and the employment outcomes of German manufacturing workers. Among workers living in inflexible labor markets, the difference between a worker at the 75th percentile of industry import exposure and one at the 25th percentile of exposure amounts to an earnings loss of roughly 11% of initial annual income (over a 10 year period).
