The first number indicates that I have 35.7% of 100. The next number indicates to me that I now have.357ths thousands of 1. They are two very different quantities. But yet they are equivalent? To me 35.7% would have come in 2nd largest, behind 108.1%. Instead it came in at 2nd smallest. No wonder I am horrible at math. Put these numbers in order, smallest first. This worksheet use decimal numbers in tenths and hundredths. For a full free set, go to the website where you can freely download them. Number and place value There have been considerable changes in the latest Year 4 Programme of Study; perhaps the main point being that children will be expected to work with larger numbers and more complex decimals and fractions. To summarise: pupils should be taught to • count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, • find 1000 more or less than a given number • count backwards through zero to include negative numbers • recognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number (thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones) • order and compare numbers beyond 1000 • identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations • round any number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000 • solve number and practical problems that involve all of the above and with increasingly large positive numbers • read Roman numerals to 100 (I to C) and know that over time, the numeral system changed to include the concept of zero and place value. During Year 4 children are expected to become fluent in the order and place value of numbers beyond 1000. They will also be expected to extend their knowledge of the number system to include decimals and fractions. We have a superb collection of resources to meet these challenges.

## Ordering Numbers - Mathsframe

Order the numbers from smallest to biggest. Choice of whole numbers, negative numbers and decimals. Once children are happy with counting on and back in ones they can begin to order a set of small numbers and position them on a number line. Placing things in order can come up in many practical situations in school and at home, including giving out pens, paints, etc . A pack of cards is an excellent resource, where any three or four cards can be turned over and then placed in order. There are two important aspects to ordering numbers. Firstly, a knowledge of numbers gained from counting and extending number sequences. Secondly, an understanding of and use of the vocabulary of comparing and ordering numbers, including ordinal numbers such as first, second, third and fourth. Terms such as most, least, smallest, largest and between are used in Year 1 and children are expected to understand and use these to compare and order numbers. Partitioning numbers is a term used to describe the splitting up of numbers into parts so as to make them easier to work with.
