The question of what to include — and not include — on a resume has become a hot topic in recent years. While including an objective statement might have been necessary a decade ago, today such a statement is seen as passé and unnecessary. Where including personal hobbies and activities might have been seen as unprofessional in the past, today employers appreciate well-rounded candidates with a variety of interests. Deciding what to include and what to leave off your resume can be a cause of frustration. You want to share as much as possible to entice an employer to call you, but you don’t want to bog the down in unnecessary details. Which then begs the question of what constitutes an unnecessary detail? In some circles, including details about relevant coursework that you completed falls under that umbrella. However, when done correctly, telling employers about the work you did in school can actually boost your chances of scoring an interview.

Aug 28, 2015. It depends. If you are a recent graduate and want to show that you've taken some tough courses that are relevant to a particular job description, then yes. If you've been working for a while, then no. If you pass the CPA exam, that's credential enough! But I see some people who include their GPA, which strikes me as overkill. I’m finishing up an advanced degree after being out in the working world for 10 years. This would be jumping into an entirely new career track (from marketing into data science) with no real world experience. My question is twofold: First, should I list all of the relevant coursework to show what I have done or is that overwhelming? Second, should I put this up-front and just sort of lightly enumerate previous experience? Summarizing the curriculum of courses you’ve taken — no, leave it off. My concern is to get past the dreaded ATS but also still have a functional resume. But if you did practical project work that’s similar to real-life work, then yes, in this case that makes sense! I’m having a really hard time showing that I have real world, soft-skill experience and that I do have knowledge of the potential job. If you had jobs that demonstrated the same sorts of things, I’d say to leave the school project work off — but in this case you don’t, so go ahead and include the school stuff. The exception to this, of course, is if you’re in the rare field that truly wants to see coursework listed, in which case your field’s conventions trump the broader ones. Generally, though, the lens to look at this through is: What can you list that demonstrates related to the job)?
