The STEM Essay Contest was launched in 2012 with 170 young women from across the Commonwealth submitting essays focusing on their vision for a future STEM education or career. We received an overwhelming number of wide-ranging and inspiring responses to the challenge of writing a story on the theme of ‘belonging’. The judging panel, headed by Cortina Butler, Director of Literature at the British Council, was extremely impressed with the quality of the entries: ‘We have learned so much from reading everyone’s work about the lives of young people growing up in the Commonwealth – both what is common to us all and what is distinct’, explained Cortina. ‘What all the entries clearly demonstrate is how important a sense of belonging is to every one of us, wherever we live.’ Read the selected stories, and the panel's comments about each one, in the sections below. The author has managed to create a clear, distinctive voice and personality, and the descriptive language creates a unique sense of place and history. A well-written, gracefully paced story of a precious gem subject to many owners over the course of history. This entry is accompanied by an evocative illustration and is a sophisticated exploration of the many types of belonging, including material value, reputation, beauty, and power. The author has used imaginative and true-to-life dialogue to create a narrative with a satisfying resolution, and has also created charming illustrations that enhance the story.
