Stand among the great literary masterpieces of the world and there is no doubt that the literary arts in Egypt reached a high point during the Middle Kingdom. Among the later works is a piece known as dates from c. There are other works, however, often overlooked from before and after this period. 2613-2181 BCE) and the love poems and other works from the New Kingdom (c. 1090-1075 BCE in the latter part of the New Kingdom after the golden days of the empire were in the past and Egypt had lost its international prestige. It is a first-person narration of a journey from Egypt to the Levant to get wood for the ship of the god Amun and the many difficulties the narrator experiences along the way; difficulties he feels he would not have known in the days of empire. Since the story takes the form of an official missive, it was first interpreted historically and is still regarded as historically accurate in its depiction of Egypt toward the end of the New Kingdom. Still, there are many details in the piece which contradict the claim that the work is reportage rather than literature. The use of dialogue, first of all, would not have appeared at such length in an official report, but one must also consider the tone, the character of the narrator, and the details of the other characters who appear in the story. The sympathetic presentation of non-Egyptians like the Tjeker and the prince of Byblos is a literary device, not part of an eye-witness account. Official reports throughout Egypt’s history routinely portray non-Egyptians in unflattering ways.

Climate change undermines the foundations of good health, affecting populations around the world, today. Whether through extremes of weather, the spread of infectious disease, or threats to food and water security, these effects are disproportionately felt by those who are most vulnerable, and people in low- and middle-income countries. Responding to climate change yields immediate and tangible benefits for human health, cleaning up polluted air, ensuring healthier diets, and encouraging physical activity. These interventions result in a healthier population, helping to reduce costs for often over-burdened healthcare systems. Early signs of investment in renewable energy and coal-fired power suggest the beginning of a broader transition maybe underway.

Fifty years after the release of the first Surgeon General's report warning of the health hazards of smoking, we have learned how to end the tobacco epidemic. Over the past five decades, scientists, researchers and policy makers have determined what works, and what steps must be taken if we truly want to bring to a close. Childhood obesity is reaching alarming proportions in many countries and poses an urgent and serious challenge. The Sustainable Development Goals, set by the United Nations in 2015, identify prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases as core priorities. Among the noncommunicable disease risk factors, obesity is particularly concerning and has the potential to negate many of the health benefits that have contributed to increased life expectancy. Progress in tackling childhood obesity has been slow and inconsistent. The Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity was established in 2014 to review, build upon and address gaps in existing mandates and strategies.

However, current systems of governance of globalization at national and international levels have not realized such potentials for most of the world's people-and in many instances have made matters worse. "Seen through the eyes of the vast majority of men and women around the world, globalization has not met their simple aspiration for decent jobs, livelihoods and a better future for their children". In 2003, official figures for global unemployment reached a record high of over 185 million people.

This is done in the context of recommended global TB strategies and targets endorsed by WHO’s Member States and broader development goals set by the United Nations. Global TB reports from previous years are available from the WHO Institutional Repository for Information Sharing (IRIS) and can be found here. Please note that direct comparisons between estimates of TB disease burden in the latest report and previous reports are not appropriate. The Global Risks Report 2018. As the pace of change accelerates, and as risk interconnections deepen, this year’s report highlights the growing strain we are placing on many of the global systems we rely on. Since 2012, Mount Saint Mary’s University’s annual Report on the Status of Women and Girls in California™ has chronicled where women are flourishing and where they are falling behind. Through the years, we’ve also discussed how equal opportunity, equitable pay and positions of influence are critical to women’s advancement. Yet when it comes to the American and Californian workforce, those attributes are too often missing. That’s why Mount Saint Mary’s 2018 Report shines a spotlight on conditions for women in the workforce, and examines why certain obstacles and biases continue to undermine professional opportunities for California’s women — and prevent companies statewide from reaching their full potential. This year’s targeted approach enables us to explore issues ranging from occupational sex segregation and gender typing to workforce safety, family-friendly employment policies and the ever-stubborn wage gap.

SUMMARY OF CONTENTS The report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (the Commission) consists of five volumes, each with a particular focus. It is important to note that, once the Amnesty Committee finishes its work, an additional volume will report on the work of that Committee, based on amnesty hearings conducted and findings made. That volume will also include summaries of the statements of those people the Commission found to have suffered gross violations of human rights. While the current report contains a full list of the names of those in respect of whom such findings were made, the codicil will include details of the violations. The bulk of the findings of the Commission may be found in the final volume, as indicated below. However, specific findings are made in individual chapters throughout the report. The logical sequence of the five volumes of the report is as follows. Volume One is an introductory volume, containing important discussion of key concepts and debates within the Commission itself and in society at large.
The 2017 Report of the Lancet Countdown. The Lancet Countdown's 2017 report tracks 40 indicators across five areas, arriving at three key conclusions The human symptoms of climate change are unequivocal and potentially irreversible`. The delayed response to climate change over the past 25 years has jeopardised. There is more than enough food produced in the world to feed everyone, yet 815 million people go hungry. As reflected in Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2), one of the greatest challenges the world faces is how to ensure that a growing global population - projected to rise to around 10 billion by 2050 – has enough food to meet their nutritional needs. To feed another two billion people in 2050, food production will need to increase by 50 percent globally. Food security is a complex condition requiring a holistic approach to all forms of malnutrition, the productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, resilience of food production systems and the sustainable use of biodiversity and genetic resources. In addition to an increase in the proportion of the world’s population that suffers from chronic hunger (prevalence of undernourishment), the number of undernourished people on the planet has also increased to 815 million, up from 777 million in 2015. This sobering news comes in a year in which famine struck in parts of South Sudan for several months in 2017 and food insecurity situations at risk of turning into famines were identified in other conflict-affected countries, namely Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen. The food security situation visibly worsened in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South Eastern and Western Asia. This was most notable in situations of conflict, in particular where the food security impacts of conflict were compounded by droughts of floods, linked in part to El Niño phenomenon and climate-related shocks.

Consumer sentiment at month's end was marginally below the mid-month reading due to uncertainty about the impact of the proposed trade tariffs. The Sentiment Index, however, still reached the highest level since 2004, and the Current Conditions Index set a new all-time peak. Importantly, all of the March gain in the Sentiment Index was among households with incomes in the bottom third ( 14.1); those in the middle third were unchanged, while the Index fell among households in the top third (-5.6). Households with incomes in the top third cited significantly greater concerns with government economic policies than last month, especially trade policies, with net references falling from 31 to just 1, offsetting their positive reactions to tax policies. The consensus expectation among consumers is that interest rates will increase in the foreseeable future.
