I was just chatting recently with our interim Dean of Instruction about a new process for committee selection for faculty. Apparently it’s not just a pain in the butt for faculty, but also for the deans in trying to insure all faculty get their requested committee picks. Well, I can verify that for two years in a row (2015-16 & 2016-17) I didn’t get any of the committees I requested. The second year it happened to me, I was seriously upset. Instead I chaired or co-chaired four different committees over the last three years and participated in several more. My solution was to not participate on those randomly assigned committees and instead serve where I thought I could best serve the college. This academic year on campus I serve on the Technology Alliance Committee, the CTLE Advisory Committee, GCC OER Committee, Learning Communities Committee (LCAC), PAR Committee, and the President’s Completion Task Force. I’m happy to report that two of those I actually requested and received as my assignment. After five years of being involved with OER, I have plenty to share about my committee participation. I also serve on a district committee for OER, Maricopa Millions, Faculty Developers Committee, and the unofficial CTL Faculty Directors Committee. I’d complain but Meghan has more than I do, so it seems pointless to complain. As chair of the GCC OER Committee, in our first year as a committee, we participated in a district wide OER Student Awareness Campaign. Our 5 person committee did the following last fall.

ENG 101 Freshman Composition Instructor Dr. Brooke Harrison Email brooke.harrison@Phone 989 774-3364 Address 220 Anspach Hall, Instead of assigning a supplementary reader with essays or fiction, I use The Times as a living, constantly changing, unpredictable and highly relevant textbook that provides both models for writing and subjects to write about. The unpredictability of the daily newspaper is both the major advantage and the major challenge. Although my course has a clear outline and a defined sequence of papers, I have to be prepared to modify whatever we are doing if something jumps off the page in the morning. This potential for spontaneity keeps both teacher and students alert. No one can work off old notes, old papers or old habits and I have to be prepared every day to find examples to illustrate (or alter my understanding of) every principle I want to teach. Using The Times as a textbook allows me to teach students about three things: argument, genre and style. One of the most important lessons of any writing course is that arguments are all around us, even in places where we don’t think to look for them. Clearly, the pages of The Times are full of arguments: the editorials, the letters to the editor, the regular columns, the essays submitted by interested citizens, even the advertisements in the lower right-hand corner of the Op-Ed page.

Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) are a set of specific activities that instructors can use to quickly gauge students’ comprehension. They are generally used to assess students’ understanding of material in the current course, but with minor modifications they can also be used to gauge students’ knowledge coming into a course or program. CATs are meant to provide immediate feedback about the entire class’s level of understanding, not individual students’. The instructor can use this feedback to inform instruction, such as speeding up or slowing the pace of a lecture or explicitly addressing areas of confusion. Pose one to two questions in which students identify the most significant things they have learned from a given lecture, discussion, or assignment. Give students one to two minutes to write a response on an index card or paper. Collect their responses and look them over quickly. Their answers can help you to determine if they are successfully identifying what you view as most important.

When you design a syllabus for any course, you begin with the outcomes that you intend for your students to achieve, and you work backwards from these to particular readings and writing assignments. This method, formalized, is called the method of backward design. Backward design is a useful method for any professor in that it ensures that all assignments, readings, and activities will connect students with the outcomes that the professor deems essential to the course. At the first stage of backward design, writing instructors should consider two issues: what they want their students to know/experience in their courses, and what they want them to be able to do, in these courses and afterwards. Since I assume that you devoted a fair amount of time to writing this, I devoted a fair amount of time to responding." I smile.
