GUIDELINES FOR FORMAT AND CONTENT OF THE DISSERTATION. CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY. Background. This section should be approximately 2-5 pages of background narrative, citing literature as appropriate and needed. You have two purposes in this section a grab your readers' attention. This article simply tells what a budding researcher must include in Chapter 5-the Summary. It also includes the tense of the verb and the semantic markers which are predominantly used in writing the summary, conclusions and recommendations. For others, writing the Chapter 5 is the easiest part in thesis writing, but there are groups of students who would like to know more about it. If you are one of them, this article is purposely written for you. Your summary may include the following: (1) objectives of the study; (2) statement of the problem; (3) respondents; (4) sampling procedures; (5) method/s of research employed; (6) statistical treatment/s applied or hypotheses tested, if there is any; (7); and results.

Suggested Guidelines for Thesis/Dissertation Chapters. Chapter 1 Introduction. Problem Statement Why is this research. Chapter 5. Empirical Model and Estimation Results. Based on theoretical framework, develop empirical model. Discuss estimation procedure and testing. Discuss estimation results and test results. There ARE some key differences between a thesis and a book chapter – here are six of the most important. The thesis chapter reader is the examiner, while the book chapter reader is someone who has either picked up and is browsing, or has bought or borrowed, an edited collection because they are generally interested in the topic. While you can rely on the thesis examiner to read the whole chapter, you have no such luxury with a book chapter reader -you must hold their interest from start to finish. The examiner has particular expectations about chapters and their form, while book chapter readers do not necessarily have firm ideas about what they will encounter. I explain this difference through the next five points. Thesis chapters often deal with more than one big idea at a time. However, like a journal article, a book chapter generally deals with only one big idea and has one major point to make. Readers of book chapters will not know what you are trying to say if you try to say too much. And again like a journal article, the book chapter must have a slant that is potentially new, different, interesting. An empirical thesis chapter for example might end up reporting much the same set of results as can be found in other people’s work, but this doesn’t matter in the overall scale of the thesis because more interesting material is found elsewhere. (But it’s good to remember that the thesis chapter with the familiar material may well be able to be reworked for a book chapter if you simply take another angle…

The following chapter concludes this report. A summary of the research is presented, and findings of the study are discussed and interpreted. The significance of this research in the immediate context of El Gallo and in the field of low-income housing is examined. Recommendations for further research end the chapter. I often get asked whether it’s a good idea to publish papers during your Ph D. I was too busy trying to finish it in 3 years and writing papers seemed like a distraction. But I feel like a bit of a fraud when I give this answer because I didn’t publish very much during my Ph D. I wanted people to use my work of course, but I only wrote one paper after I finished then put the thesis in the online repository before I turned my attention to back my job – and building this blog. On reflection, I wish I had not taken such a laissez faire attitude to publishing during my Ph D. Sure, I got my degree quickly, but the chickens are coming home to roost now that I want to get into the grant application game.

Capturing and sharing your inner most creative genius has never been easier. From iPhone to iPad with just a flick of the finger, iBrainstorm has redefined the very nature of collaboration. Think it. Share it. Love it! Writing a thesis, or indeed an academic book, means constructing an extended argument. One common problem in writing a very long text is that it’s not hard in 80,000 to 100,000 words for the reader to get lost in between chapters – they aren’t sure of the connection of one to the other and of how they work together to advance the case being made, move by move. That’s because chapters are often written in a different order to the order in which they are read, and sometimes they are written at very different times. Of course, sometimes the text is written straight through. But whatever the circumstances, it’s easy for both reader and writer to get lost in the overall argument because there is just soooo much detail to cover. Here is one way to address the getting lost problem and one that many thesis writers find helpful. Confident and clever writers will find their own way to connect chapters together, but if you’re feeling a bit stuck this will help. It’s just a simple frame to use at the beginning of each new chapter. The frame – link, focus, overview – can be used for writing the first draft of the whole text.
