Several days ago, I was able to visit Cherington Place with my friends, a nursing home located in Surrey. Our task was to keep the elderly company, so we made them cards and cookies, and prepared performances to keep them entertained (offering our time, treasures, and talent). It was hard to imagine the difference we could make in their lives, since we were just a bunch of strangers giving them a visit. But now I know not to underestimate a stranger’s capacity to impact another’s life, because the effects can be tenfold. I would’ve never predicted how amazing the effects of my visit to the nursing home would be. After greeting the elderly and speaking to them one-on-one, I was amazed by how appreciative they were for my visit.

This Parsi baug is good and everyone takes care of each other. I thought an outsider’s perspective would be interesting. Parsis from cities across Gujarat and Mumbai are choosing to settle in Navsari, Surat’s twin city, in the company of new-found friends, some bedridden, some just elderly. Even though almost each one of them nurses the sadness of loneliness, their voices light up in loud, crisp and cheerful greeting, “Hi, Darling!

" The Interact Club and the Rotary Club members had taken the initiative for the smooth functioning of the visit to the Old Age Home. Even they joined us in the songs and each one of them had a smile on their face as they were reminded of probably all the olden memories and old times. All of us had practiced the old songs and dedicated these songs to the members of the home. After putting up a small entertainment programme for them we went in groups to their rooms and sat down to listen to what they had to say. That is we should have due respect for the old people and lend our ears for a minute and just wait for them to express their thoughts. Some of them even had tears in their eyes when they were talking about their past stories. Each one of them had their own reasons for coming to that place. Some of them were quite comfortable and contented while some of them were dissatisfied and upset.

When LIFE set out to do a four-part series on aging in America in 1959, the magazine's agenda was abundantly clear. “The problem of old age,” the introduction read, “has never been so vast or the solutions so inadequate.” There were five times as many elderly Americans as there had been at the turn of the century, and 60 percent of them had an annual income of less than $1,000. Medicare was still two presidents away, and people who couldn’t live with their families or on their own were often sent to state institutions where, the story read, they “lie in bed or sit beside it, imprisoned by helplessness, waiting to die, yet clinging to lives of crushing emptiness.”To convey the urgency of the problem to its readers, LIFE would put them face to face with it. The editors would ask them, implicitly, to picture their own mothers and grandmothers “stored away like vegetables.” Or better yet, to see their own as-yet-unwrinkled faces reflected in the faces on its pages. Before photographer Grey Villet was dispatched to St. Louis and Atlanta to photograph residents of state hospitals and nursing homes, his editor scoped out the locations. In a note that accompanied the rolls of film sent back to LIFE’s offices, he wrote: “Though the place is well kept and clean and the spirit of the inmates generally good, the 1911 architecture plus the general forlornness of all institutionalized old people should produce a good set of horror pictures if you want to shoot it that way.”Later in the notes, the editor intentionally changed his language to “residents”—“a term preferred over ‘inmates.’” But Villet’s photos leave no doubt as to why one might compare them to prisoners. The expressions he captured are imbued with isolation and ennui, the state of being LIFE had described as “waiting to die.” His subjects seem to occupy their own civilization, separate and apart from the world that bustles outside their windows, a world that holds their past but refuses them a future. Louis Chronic Hospital, women showed up to the dinner table two hours early and waited in silence. The editors agreed with hospital staff not to use subjects’ names, but conceded, “names would have been almost impossible to get anyway, since most of [the] people didn’t even know their names.”Mae Rice, a nurse who ran a 16-bed nursing home in Chamblee, Georgia, was candid about the indignities her charges faced daily: “how their bladders empty unexpectedly on the floor, their gastric eruptions, their night time screams, their palsied movements.” A religious woman, she believed that if nothing else, “God has a purpose for these old people, even if it’s only to sit there on the porch and pray for their folks outside.”If the magazine was going to take up real estate in four consecutive issues to convey the gravity of the problem, it wasn’t going to stay mum on remedies.
Jun 8, 2011. An old age home is usually the place, a home for those old people who have no one to look after them or those who have been thrown out of their homes. It is very clear to all who visit an old age home that, all the inmates are there, not for the love of being away from home and independent but, because. In recent years it has become far more normal for people to live alone, particularly in large cities in the developed world. In my opinion, this trend could have both positive and negative consequences in equal measure. The rise in one-person households can be seen as positive for both personal and broader economic reasons. On an individual level, people who choose to live alone may become more independent and self-reliant than those who live with family members. A young adult who lives alone, for example, will need to learn to cook, clean, pay bills and manage his or her budget, all of which are valuable life skills; an increase in the number of such individuals can certainly be seen as a positive development. From an economic perspective, the trend towards living alone will result in greater demand for housing. This is likely to benefit the construction industry, estate agents and a whole host of other companies that rely on homeowners to buy their products or services. However, the personal and economic arguments given above can be considered from the opposite angle.

Without the term breaks, the prospect of a whole year of school will put a damper on any teenagers’ spirit. Most students pursue recreational activities that are usually neglected during school days. They indulge in leisurely reading and catch up on correspondence. Besides allowing a break from the monotony of school, holidays also rejuvenate so that we will be energised at the commencement of a new term. It give teachers and students an oppurtunity to relax and recuperate too. As for me,this holidays give me a sense of realisation on parental love and service to the community. During the holidays, I had a golden opportunity to visit Seri Cahaya Old Folks Home which is located in a stone’s thrown away distance from my school.

Unfortunately some of the elderly were very sad, their family members visit them very rarely. Actually at any age, being neglected is the worst feeling no? The very concept of an old age home is new to India. An old age home is usually the place, a home for those old people who have no one to look after them or those who have been thrown out of their homes by their children. The place is of course like home where the inmates get all the facilities for a routine living, like food, clothing, and shelter. All these necessities are well looked after but, the much-needed love, and care of loved ones is of course sadly missing; for, how can outsiders provide solace? In these homes, it is very interesting and even touching to talk to people whether they are men or women.

How I know I’m getting older: Sometimes I see a photo of myself or glance in the mirror and am surprised that I look older than I feel. I’ve realized that I now see young guys in movies as my sons instead of my love interests. But what I like about aging: I feel comfortable in my body. My body can take my kids on bike rides and kiss my husband and tap tap tap on the computer. Lots of wrinkles, and gray hairs that stick in all directions. Like, if a guy dies in a WWII movie, I’m sad as if I were his mom, versus his fiancé back home. I love laugh lines; they exist because of all the times you’ve laughed at funny things. “I’ve never got used to the Queen being grown up,” writes Margaret Atwood in Cat’s Eye. If I borrow someone’s phone, I’ll sometimes press a key by accident and need them to reopen the screen I was on. Like, tiny infants who should be rocked to sleep in a bassinet. I understand how little old ladies can sit by the window and just remember the past. Hard times can feel endless, but they always always end. And frown lines are good for freaking children out at bedtime. “Whenever I see her cut-off head on the money, I think of her as fourteen years old… The Queen has had grandchildren since, discarded thousands of hats, grown a bosom and (heresy to think it) the beginning of a double chin. She’s in there somewhere, that other one.” You learn things over the years. My brain has “mental furniture” — poems and books and conversations that are part of me now. I’ve been a bookish little girl; a ballet-loving teenager; a college student in love; a brokenhearted new grad; a miserable law student; an anxious twentysomething searching for a path; an intern, an assistant, an editor, a boss; a happy friend; a blissed-out newlywed; an exhausted new mother; a thirtysomething woman writing this post. Which gelato flavor to order (i.e., the yogurt flavor sounds like the worst but is actually the best). I used to lie awake beating myself up at night about how I might have done some random thing (socially, work-related, parenting, etc.) better or differently. Now I think, “I’m learning,” and it feels productive and calming, and I’m able to put it (and myself) to bed. Sometimes you feel stuck or lost or heartbroken, but things always change.

It’s hard to say exactly what sparked it other than … Kids all over America are smitten by a show about a previously minor Founding Father who probably would have gotten chucked off the $10 bill had it not been for the genius of Lin-Manuel Miranda. well, have you ever been the parent of a 14-year-old girl? When I was Elizabeth’s age, we all wore Rush and Black Sabbath T-shirts and sang about how Mommy’s alright and Daddy’s alright, they just seem a little weird. I have now seen every show, all seven seasons, 92 episodes. In other words, I have spent roughly four of the last 21 days doing nothing but watching Mad Men. I mean, the show was superb but I’m glad it’s over. Elizabeth is one of several million people — so many of them teenagers — who have become obsessed with the Broadway show “Hamilton.” It is funny, if you think about it. But she is 14, and in some ways that explains everything. She recently had coloring pencils shipped from Sweden or Switzerland or some such place. It isn’t because I dislike television — it’s the opposite. I know the only way to avoid free-falling into that television hole is to never start watching in the first place. For years, people have been on me to watch “Mad Men.” Three weeks ago, I caved in and decided to watch. The other day, she told me that her favorite movie of all time is “The Godfather.” I mean, she is more me than I am. I would take Elizabeth to see “Hamilton.” We have a flaw in my family, one that goes back generations: We tend to grow obsessed with, well, stuff. OK, my mother through the years has had been possessed by countless activities including (but not limited to): paint-by-numbers; cross-stitch; stamp collecting; Harlequin Romances; computer programming (the most profitable of such obsessions); various soap operas; various reality TV shows; crossword puzzles; cookbooks; Candy Crush; all sorts of collectibles and, most recently, coloring books. This is the reason I haven’t seen Game of Thrones or The Americans or Downton Abbey or House of Cards or any other recently popular television show.
